The purpose of this study was to make more extensive search for acid etching effect
of dentin surface with 23 deciduous molars and 62 premolars.
Samples were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to determine if
there had been visible structural changes according to various kinds, concentrations and
exposure times of acid, and to observe interface between dentin and resin, and resin tag
penetration to dentinal tubule.
The results of this study were as follows:
The dentin surface after treatment with acid etching solution showed that tubule
aperature were opened and widened (3-5¥ìm in diameter), extended 10-20¥ìm below the
surface.
The etching effect to various concentrations and exposure times of acid gave no
apparent difference in appearace of dentinal surface.
Treatment with citric acid had a milder etching effect than treatment with phosphoric
acid for same exporsure time.
The interface between dentin and resin had a more closeness after acid treatment.
Resin tag penetrations were apparent after acid treatment (10-25¥ìm in length) and their
extent were influenced by dry condition of dentin.
No significant difference was found between deciduous and permanent tooth in all
experiment.
